The Charleston Ballet Theater was founded in 1967 and started the professional component in 1987, which is composed of 24 dancers. Charlestson Ballet Theatre is not your run-of-the-mill ballet company steeped in white tutus and old Russian classics. It is a company of artists committed to the excellence of artistic quality who have retained their own distinctive characteristics, even as they meld together to achieve a uniform style. The primary artistic goals of the directors, Don and Patricia Cantwell, and resident choregrapher Jill Eathorne Bahr has been to develop a distinct repertory and style that can best be described as an ease in performing, the ability to effortlessly convey the electric modern movement of Jill Eathorne Bahr, to the pure classicism of Romeo and Juliet and everything in between.
Charleston Ballet Theatre is represented nationally by Gary Lindsey Artist Services in San Francisco and has toured throughout the eastern coast from Maine to Miami Beach. It is an honary lifetime member of Regional Dance America and a member of Dance USA, the national service orgazination for non-profit professional dance companies. Charleston Ballet Theatre has hosted three dance festivals in Charleston with approximately 600 dancers from 9 states attending each festival. During the Piccolo Spoleto Festival Charleston Ballet Theatre presents an additional 24 performances along with smaller repertoire performances and special events performed in Charleston Ballet Theatre's own black box theatre.
