About The Course
Course Description
All courses will be run on scenic Kiawah Island. Enjoy maritime forest, marsh views and grand homes as you run through the island community. All participants will have 8 hours to complete the course. The course will officially close at 4pm. Be aware that during the race, roads are open to automobile traffic. Please note: A majority of the course lies within a secure private community and is not accessible by vehicle for preview prior to the race.
Race Numbers
Race numbers have been assigned to all pre-registered entrants. Please use the safety pins to attach the number to the front chest area of your outside garment. 1-4000 series will identify a half marathon runner and the 5000 - 6500 series will identify a full marathon runner.
Race Start
Both races start and finish in the East Beach Village. ALL RUNNERS BE READY FOR THE 8 AM START! This race is not seeded, however we do ask late arrivals to join the group at the end of the line.
Mileage Markers
The course will be marked with signs, arrows and race monitors. Mileage increments will be marked every mile and water stations are placed approximately every 2 miles. Digital clocks will be placed at key mile markers for split times.
Water Refill Stations
Water refill stations are placed approximately every two miles and are supplied with Applachian Spring Water and lemon-lime Gatorade. Volunteers will present water first and Gatorade second, and lastly a water refill station. The volunteers distributing Gatorade will be wearing yellow jerseys. Additionally, bananas and oranges will be available until the supply is depleted.
First Aid
A medical team from Trident Sports Medicine will be available at the start / finish line, at various locations on the course, and in the Conference Center for any runners in need of medical attention. A medical team from the Medical University of South Carolina will follow the runners through the completion of the race and will be available to assist any runner in the case of an emergency.
Restrooms
Port-a-lets will be available in front of and behind the start / finish line, and placed approximately every two miles along the course.
Spectator Shuttle

For spectators, there will be continuous round trip shuttles from the shuttle drop off/pick-up site (Sanctuary Parking Lot) to the racecourse on Flyway Drive, returning back to West Beach and East Beach Villas. Shuttles will run from 8:30am - 2:00pm, departing on the half hour.
Spectators on Bikes
Adult Bicycles will be available for a daily rental fee near the race start on race day. Rentals are available on a first come-first serve basis beginning at 6:30am. Additional bike sizes and longer rentals are available at the Heron Park Nature Center at Night Heron Park, 843.768.6001.
Safety is our primary concern! The Kiawah Island Marathon Bike Rules and Regulations have been established for your safety and the safety of others! If you bike anywhere on the course, it is your responsibility to know and follow all Kiawah Island Marathon bicycle rules and regulations.
• Spectators, bikers and strollers must not in any way impede any registered participant or the flow of traffic on the roads!
• No pacing a runner
• All bikers must follow the directions of the course monitors, volunteers, Kiawah Island security and the police.
• Helmets are suggested and complimentary with all Resort bike rentals.
• Ride on the right side of the road, with the flow of traffic.
• Ride single file. Multiple bikers must fall in line, no biking side-by-side in groups.
• No circling a runner.
• Keep with the flow of bike traffic.
• Give the right of way to all runners and pedestrians.
• STOP before riding out into traffic from a driveway, sidewalk, bike path or parking lot.
• Obey all stop signs.
• Look back and yield to traffic coming from behind before turning left at intersections.
• Use proper hand signals to indicate turns.
• Bikers on the course may only have intermittent contact with the runner.
• When riding in the street, obey all traffic signals and laws.
• Anticipate your mistakes and those of others!
Bicycles are NOT ALLOWED on the "Allee of Oaks" stretch of the course. Bikers will be detoured to Flyway Drive. Please abide by course signs for bicycle routing. Bikers failing to follow safety guidelines will be asked to return to race venue.
