New Spectator Viewing Areas

We are excited to announce that with our new race courses our top spectator viewing points are now an easy walk from the start and finish line! Whether you are looking for the perfect location to see your family member or friend run by, or want the thrilling opportunity to support large groups of runners- we’ve hand-picked the best areas to spectate along the course and get you right in the middle of the action! Green Dolphin Way
Half Marathon mile 8.5 / Marathon mile 21.5
Easy .3 mile walk from the race venue. Give your runner a boost of confidence as they head toward the breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean.

Walking from the Race Venue:

  • Follow bike path adjacent to Finish Line Party Tent
  • Cross over Sanctuary Beach Dr.
  • R onto Sanctuary Bike path
  • L at the end of the bike path onto Sanctuary Service Road
  • R onto Green Dolphin Way

BONUS: A great opportunity to sneak out to the beach yourself!

Sanctuary Grand Lawn
Half Marathon mile 8.5 / Marathon mile 21.5
Your opportunity for the most picturesque view on the island! Relax “southern style” in an Adirondack chair while taking in the beautiful view of rolling dunes and the Atlantic Ocean!

Note: bikes are not allowed in this area- ample bike parking is located outside of Sanctuary Hotel main entrance.

Walking from the Race Venue:

  • Follow 'Shuttle' signs to the Sanctuary Parking lot
  • Enter main entrance of Sanctuary Hotel and continue out back doors

BONUS: Coffee and light snacks are available for purchase inside the Hotel at Beaches N Cream, or stop in to marvel at the seasonal Gingerbread houses on display.

Sanctuary Pool Deck  
Half Marathon mile 8.6 / Marathon mile 21.6

Party on the Pool Deck 10am - 2pm. With our new race courses traversing the Sanctuary’s Terrace Lawn, Grand Lawn and Pool Deck, the hotel is opening their venue to all as a prime spectator viewing spot with a touch of Southern hospitality. They will feature a Bloody Mary bar ($10) and beer ($5). Their chefs will be on site grilling burgers, hot dogs, and chicken. There is limited table seating available at the pool deck; however, to go options are available.

Walking from the Race Venue:

  • Follow 'Shuttle' signs to the Sanctuary Parking lot
  • When facing the hotel, between the right wing of the hotel and the race course (gravel path) you will see a grassy lawn; follow this lawn straight to the pool deck.
  • Note: bikes are not permitted on the lawn or pool deck.

Sea Forest Drive

Half Marathon mile 9.2 / Marathon mile 22.3
Wide open area ample space to set up a lawn chair and spend your day cheering on runners.

Walking from the Race Venue:

  • Walk down Town Center Way
  • L on to Sea Forest Drive
  • Walk straight for .1 mile and pick your spot on the course

Sea Forest Drive at Night Heron Park
Half Marathon mile 9.4 / Marathon mile 22.5

DJ Trevor will be on site throughout the day picking up the beat so runners can keep their pace.

Walking from the Race Venue:

  • Walk down Town Center Way
  • L on to Sea Forest Drive
  • Walk straight for .5 mile and pick your spot on the course

BONUS: DJ will be onsite all morning! Located adjacent to Night Heron Park, this is a great vantage point for families with children. Restrooms and live animals are located inside the Heron Park Nature Center (open 8:30am -12pm).

Night Heron Park Soccer Field
Half Marathon mile 12.6 / Marathon mile 25.7

Five minute walk (.4 mile) from the race start/finish, you’ll be greeted by the island sounds of the Haut Gap Middle School Steel Drum Band when you arrive to this expansive grassy area.

Note: Spectators are not able to travel back and forth to the Race Venue via the Kiawah Island Parkway bike path, this path is reserved for runners. However, follow the ‘Spectators’ signs for an easy short cut to the finish line.

Walking from the Race Venue:

  • Walk down Town Center Way
  • R on to Sea Forest Drive
  • First L onto Park Lake Drive
  • At the end of Park Lake Drive, cut through first 2 villas (Parkside 4504 and 4505) this will lead you straight to the soccer field.

BONUS: Live music! Night Heron Park features a playground for young children!

Bicycle Rentals:

Since much of the race course is behind a security gate, bikes are the best way for runners and their fan clubs to preview the race course. The Resort has Beach Cruiser style bikes for family members of all ages, including child attachments. For safety reasons, children's bikes are highly discouraged from the race course. Family Dinners:

The whole family is invited to gather at our pre-race dinner party! There are plenty of kid-friendly options on our buffet lines and dancing to our live music is fun for all ages. Plus, all kids get a special rate at the pre- dinners to help make celebrating with their running family members more economical. For information on the Pre-Race Celebration Buffet, visit here.

Family Room:

While waiting for friends and family who are running the marathon, guests are welcome to bring their children into the Family Room. There will be toys, coloring materials and a children’'s movie playing in the room throughout the morning. The Family Room will be located in the Rutledge Room inside the East Beach Conference Center. This is an unsupervised room; therefore an adult must accompany children. Children are never to be left unattended.

Nature Center:

Stop by the Night Heron Park Nature Center and get an up-close look at some of Kiawahs coolest creatures, even turtles and alligators! Naturalists are on-hand to answer questions about the wildlife on Kiawah and identify any mystery items you discover on your Island adventures. The Nature Center is also home to our Nature Shop, the perfect place to purchase unique eco-friendly toys and Holiday presents. The Nature Center is open daily at 8:30 am, Race Day hours are 8:30 am to 12 pm.

Nature Tours:

The Nature Program has family-friendly guided tours available every day. Let our Naturalists open your eyes to all the beautiful wildlife Kiawah has to offer. Nature tours require reservations, which can be made in advance by calling (843) 768-6001 or by visiting the Heron Park Nature Center.

Volunteer!

The expansive running course creates a tremendous demand for volunteers at key directional points and water stations. The Marathon is a fun, high-spirited event and we need enthusiastic volunteers to motivate, encourage and support our runners. For 2016, volunteers are needed Friday, December 9th and Saturday, December 10th.

Individual Volunteers

Awesome volunteers at the Kiawah Island Marathon

We are now recruiting individuals for the 2016 race. All volunteers will receive a marathon long sleeve staff shirt, snack and beverage service, and preferred parking. 

Volunteer Groups

Raise money for your charity. We are offering an incentive program for our volunteer groups. Bring a minimum of 10 people and we will donate $25 per volunteer to your charity. If your group would like to volunteer, please contact us at RaceVolunteer@KiawahResort.com

Shifts available Saturday, December 10th:

Water Stations Morning: 7am – 1 pm - Great for larger groups 25 - 40 volunteers
Water Stations Afternoon: 11am - 4pm - Great for smaller groups 10 - 15 volunteers
Finish Line Morning: 6:30am - 12:30 - Great for a groups of 20 - 30 volunteers
Finish Line Afternoon: 11am - 4pm - Group of 10 - 15 volunteers
