RACE DAY INFORMATION

Critical Locations and Times

  • Race Venue: Night Heron Park (body marking, chip distribution, bike check-in)
  • Race Start Location: Front beach, east of the Sanctuary, near boardwalk #27. In the event of a change in the ocean current, swimmers will be notified race morning of an alternate swim start and shuttles will transport accordingly.

Parking

Off Island Athletes
All athletes staying off-island will be directed to the parking area at the Night Heron Park soccer field.

On Island Athletes
Athletes staying on Kiawah Island are strongly advised to walk or bike to the race venue at Night Heron Park. Island Maps are provided at the desk at the Nature Center.

1) Body Marking and Chip Distribution

  • 5:30 am – 6:45 am
  • Pavilion at Night Heron Park
  • Participants must present their running bib with their race number to receive timing chip.
  • Chips:Timing chip is to be worn at all times during the race. Volunteers will remove chips in the finish chute after the race. All chips must be returned! There will be a $30 fee for un-returned chips.
  • Bibs:During the run, your bib number must be on the front of your body. You can use the pins you were given to pin it to the shirt you'll be wearing during the run or you may use a number belt.

2) Bike Drop-off

  • 5:30 am – 6:45 am
  • Night Heron Park Parking lot (ocean side)
  • As an amenity to our athletes, we are providing an optional bike check-in on Saturday...take advantage of it. Overnight security will be provided.

    Rack your bike by either hooking the seat (front or back) over the rail of the bike rack or by hooking the handlebars/brake levers over the rail. Whatever works best for you.

3) Stage Equipment in TA

  • 5:30 am – 6:55 am
  • Only athletes will be allowed in the TA.
  • If you have not yet been body marked, your wrist band is required for entry.

4) Confirm your Race Numbers are Ready

  • At Packet Pick-up you received your race numbers
  • Smallest number has self-adhesive and should be placed on the front of your bike helmet.
  • Middle sized number is your run bib. Use provided safety pins to attach to the front of your running shirt.
  • Long piece has self-adhesive and should be attached to the cross bar on your bike.

5) Restrooms and Final Fueling

  • Restrooms, water and Heed Sports Drinks are available on the deck at Night Heron Park and inside the TA.

6) Get to the Race Start

Walking

  • Athletes are welcome to walk to race start.
  • Please access the beach via Boardwalk 18 (adjacent to TA)
  • Once on the beach, simply follow the 'Race Start' signs.

Shuttle

  • 6:15 am – 7:00am
  • Pick up shuttle on Sea Forest Drive outside TA (athletes only).
  • Shuttles will be transporting athletes from Night Heron Park to the boardwalk nearest the race start.
  • This shuttle is for athletes only. Friends and family can inquire at the Nature Center or information desk on how best to get to the beach access to view the swim portion of the triathlon.
  • Don't Forget your Swim Cap!

7) Article Storage

  • At Packet Pick-up athletes can pick up a Kiawah Triathlon synch bag.
  • If you wish to use Article Storage, bring this bag (clearly marked with your bib #) to swim start.
  • Volunteers will be on hand to collect bags.
  • At the completion of the event, your bag will be available at the Nature Center in NHP
  • Valuables such as wallets and cameras should not be dropped off in article storage.
  • The staff is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

Night Heron Grill

Located in the heart of Night Heron Park, a few steps from the Transition Area and event finish line.

  • Breakfast
  • 6am – 10am
  • Coffee, Juice, Croissants, Muffins, Bagels, Bananas, Apples and assorted snacks available for purchase.

  • Lunch
  • 10 am - 4pm
  • Serving delicious wraps, burgers, salads, and sandwiches in a casual relaxing outdoor environment.

Transition Area (TA)

  • Only athletes will be allowed in the TA.

The Swim

  • Swim cap must be worn at all times.
  • Swimmers will start in waves.
  • If you miss your wave time, see race staff member and you will be placed in the last wave and you will have a penalty assessed.
  • All swimmers must circle the first and last buoy. However, in between you can swim on either side of the buoys.
  • If you experience trouble during the swim, please raise your hand and a lifeguard or kayaker will assist you.
  • Swimmers may stop and rest by holding on to our kayaks without penalty as long as no forward progress is not being made.

The Bike

  • Bike helmet must be on and buckled before you leave the Transition Area.
  • Do not mount your bike until you have passed the mount line, which will be outside of the Transition Area on Sea Forest Drive.
  • The roads are coned and marked, but you must always be alert to traffic intruding onto the course.
  • Stay as far to the right as safely possible and pass only on the left.
  • Drafting is not allowed.
  • There is one Aid Station (water only) on the bike course (mile 16). Plan accordingly!
  • You must dismount your bike before the dismount line.
  • The dismount line will be located on Sea Forest Drive outside the TA and will be clearly marked.
  • You may not unbuckle your helmet until after you have re-racked your bike.
  • Trek Bicycle Store of Mt Pleasant will be providing SAG on the bike course, if needed.

The Run

  • Bib number must be visible during the run.
  • The course will be well marked (follow the cones and arrows) and volunteers will be there to help.
  • The run aid station (with water and Heed Sports Drink) will be located at approximately mile 1.5, 3, 3.75 and 4.5.

General

  • You must obey all police officers and course marshals; otherwise, a penalty or disqualification could occur.

Post-Race Information

Finish Line Party

Everyone is welcome to the Finish Line Celebration at the field at Night Heron Park, featuring live music, high carb food, and beer. Food and beer is complimentary to bibbed athletes only. Please keep your bib visible. Night Heron Grill will be open throughout the day for spectators.
