Green Initiatives

"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." - Margaret Mead

Over the past 5 years, the Marathon Green Team has implemented numerous initiatives to host a smarter, more responsible race. We have been motivated by the willingness and excitement of our runners, volunteers, and spectators to pitch in and make these initiatives a success and we thank everyone who has participated! The island and its people are what make our race so special to thousands of runners and their families every year, and we in turn are continuously exploring new ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle all race-related materials to ensure that there will always be beautiful places to run.

Recycling/Composting
  • Minimizing the amount of landfill waste by race participants/staff/volunteers
  • On-site single stream recycling of bottles, cans, paper, paperboard; corrugated cardboard recycling separately
  • Expected zero food waste through local donation of leftover food and with KIGR’s composting program for partially eaten food.
  • B-tags, Race Bibs all collected post-race to be recycled.
  • Heat sheets are collected near the finish line and send to Trex where they will be used as post-consumer decking material.

Donation
  • Course clothing not claimed after the event are donated to local non-profit.
  • Participants are encouraged to bring unwanted pairs of shoes for our “Soles for Souls” shoe drive.
  • Volunteers have the opportunity to give a monetary donation to a local non-profit organization of their choice in exchange for their assistance during the race through our “Communities helping Communities” initiative.
  • Left-over perishable food from meals before and after the race will be donated to Lowcountry Food Bank.

Equipment/Materials
  • Award medals made from 100% recycled glass
  • Event information packets sent electronically and approximately 98% race registrations completed

Ongoing Initiatives a Part of our Race
  • Instead of lead cars we have used course leaders on bike
  • Runners encouraged to use reusable bottles to stay hydrated
  • Use of rented equipment; course signage re-used year after year
  • Volunteer “Green Teams” regulate and promote recycling efforts
  • Course clean-up crews have been so efficient that there is little trace of a marathon within hours after the event
  • Thank you cards are made of paper with plant seeds in them
  • Educate the event’s sustainability initiatives and the island’s unique wildlife to participants and the public.
