Volunteer Day - Helping Charleston Grow
Charleston Area Children's Garden Project
In honor of Earth Week, Kiawah Island will be hosting a Volunteer Day to extend our help to the Charleston Area Children's Garden Project (CACGP). Come join us on Sunday, April 18th at Mt. Zion Elementary School on Johns Island from 12pm - 4pm and volunteer your time helping create and maintain a garden!
The Charleston Area Children's Garden Project has been transforming empty spaces into places of beauty, peace, and real food since the year 2000. The children feel the satisfaction of hard work well done as well as watching the magic of growinf food take place. this project addresses undereducated, low income neighborhoods who are largely absent from the understanding and participation in their own community environment. The knowledge and process of growing edible foods gives the children a hands-on ownership and protection of their community, an integral awareness of what maintains health, and teaches how all living things are inter-related. CACGP has a vision of not only creating a safe and beautiful places, but now more than ever of fighting childhood obesity, hunger and diabetes through hands-on expereinces and guided information about good food through growing a garden.
Please join us in volunteering our helpful hands to this noteworthy project. Sign up today by call the Heron Park Nature Center at 843.768.6001. A sign up sheet will also be located in the center for interested volunteers.
For more information on this wonderful project, its positive effect on the community, and how you can get involved, please visit the Charleston Area Children's Garden Project website.

Bird Banding Demonstration
9am - 10:30am
The capture of birds in nets and banding them with a unique identifier can give biologists an insight into the health and demographics of the population of birds being studied. Important information on the productivity, survivorship, and movements of many species can be attained through a banding program. To determine the importance of Kiawah Island as stopover habitat for migrating songbirds, biologists for the Town of Kiawah Island are banding birds during the spring and fall. From this data, we can learn what species are using Kiawah, form indices of population trends, and determine the physical condition of birds as they rest and refuel on Kiawah Island. Banding is also taking place during the winter to study over-winter survival of non-breeding birds, with particular focus on the Yellow-rumped Warbler. Join Kiawah Biologists, Jim Jordon and Aaron Given, for a bird banding demo at Night Heron Park, complimentary, everyone welcome. Call the Nature Center for more information 843.768.6001
