It was a perfect Thirsty Thursday for July’s Kiawah Beverage Series, ‘Cantina Después Del Anochecer’ (Cantina After Dark)! The summer sun was shining bright, there was a warm breeze blowing, Latin music was sweeping through the air, tequila was flowing, and the chatter and laughter from guests was a sure sign that the West Beach Cantina’s Beverage Series Dinner was a hit! Tacos and fajitas to the left, tequila tastings and a nacho bar to the right…life was good at the Cantina last night.
Chef de Cuisine, Amanda Thacker, has been preparing for the Cantina’s Fiesta for a few weeks now – Local Catch Tacos with Watermelon Pico de Gallo and Queso Fresco, Braised Pork Tacos with Jicama Slaw, Tequila-Lime Fajitas topped with Chipotle Crema and Housemade Tomatillo Salsa…I’m not sure which one was the ‘favorite’ because they were all spoken for by the end of the night! The Nacho Bar was non-stop all evening too, House Fried Tortilla Chips with a bounty of toppings, Queso Fresco, Chorizo, Fresh Guacamole, Housemade Pico de Gallo, Sliced Jalapenos, Lime Wedges, and Sour Cream along with Spanish Rice and Grilled Mexican “Street Corn”. Each item was paired with a specific Mexican beer that complemented the food and allowed certain flavors to be highlighted.
Maria Jose Lehman, the Tequila Ambassador from Ben Arnold Beverage Co., was the life of the party. She had a lineup of guests in front of her throughout the evening waiting patiently to hear the backstory and tasting details of each 100% agave tequila. Maria is very passionate about tequila and loved sharing stories with guests. Everyone had the privilege of listening to her speak on the different brands…
Beginning with Jose Cuervo Tradicional Silver – this blanco, unaged tequila is mild with little bite. The agave is muted and you can taste a hint of honey, vanilla and lemon. The flavors are smooth and fresh with a crisp, sweet taste.
Casamigos Reposado Tequila is aged for 7 months in American Oak, which gives it the darker coloring. A slight caramel, mint, and cinnamon flavor are present in the smell and taste. At first the tequila is smooth and the finish is slightly rougher.
Maestro Dobel Tequila is extremely smooth with a very clean, crisp look. It is a full-bodied tequila with complex bold oak, vanilla, and butterscotch notes. It finishes quick with a spicy snap.
1800 Coconut Tequila is infused with fresh coconut water which gives it a subtle coconut flavor. To the taste it is bitter to start with a sweet ending.
Tanteo Jalapeño Tequila is infused with jalapeños additives; it is not as overbearing as it sounds. There is a well-balanced pepper taste with agave flavor and is very smooth on the palate.
Overall, the Cantina Después Del Anochecer was a success, a well-rounded flavorful experience, if you will. Keep in mind that our Kiawah Beverage Series events take place on the third Thursday of each month, be sure to save these dates to your calendar as this is one supper club you won’t want to miss out on!
