Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s long-time tennis director, Roy Barth, has an outstanding tennis background as a player, teacher, professional, and administrator.  He was ranked as high as #8 in men’s singles and #2 in men’s doubles and reached the top 50 in the world in men’s singles on the pro tour. Through his years playing as a professional and teaching here at Kiawah, he has developed a very unique tennis philosophy. He has given us some insight into his technique by sharing his top 10 tennis tips with us:  

 LOW
You can’t be too low

CONSTANT MOVEMENT
Hit and move—don’t’ stand and watch

BALL DIRECTION
Finish the hand in the direction of the target

RELAXED
Must have relaxed grip during racquet preparation

BUTT OF RAQUET
Line up oncoming ball with ‘butt’ of racquet on volleys and groundstrokes

POINT OF IMPACT
Freeze your eyes and head at the point of impact on every stroke

SERVE/OVERHEAD
Sideways to target, relax grip, arm up, spring up, eyes up

RACQUET HEAD SPEED
Swing slow to faster on groundstrokes and serve

HAND LEVERAGE
Hand leverage is the key for power and control

SHORT STEPS
The closer to the ball the shorter the steps
