Thursday kicked off our Mingo Point Oyster Roast & BBQ season on the resort! Thank you to everyone that came out and made it a huge success, all 812 of y’all! This isn’t your typical backyard oyster roast; this is a one of a kind authentic Lowcountry experience! If you missed out…don’t worry, there’s another Mingo TONIGHT, Monday, April 21st!
Upon arrival the smell of smoking BBQ and grilling steaks immediately hits you, the high energy sounds of ‘The Island Trio’ are playing their steel drum and singing some island favorites, people are gathering around oyster tables shucking away, the picnic tables are filling up with families and couples alike, the sun is high in the sky, the Kiawah River is sparkling and we’re ready for one of the greatest events of the year…Easter Mingo! Traditionally, we have two Oyster Roasts during Easter week, one the Thursday before Easter and then one the Monday following.
With over one ton (roughly 1,800 pounds) of oysters being roasted throughout the evening and over one dozen items on the buffet menu, including Angus Sirloin Steak fresh off the grill and Loaded Potato Skins from our Wood Fired Oven, you’re sure to leave with a full belly. Not only is this event all about the food, there is also a local artisan craft market for guests to peruse through. The craft market features a popular Lowcountry art…sweet grass baskets, as well as, local wood work and artwork, handmade jewelry, bags and scarves along with some clothing items. These vendors love coming out to Mingo Point to show off their goods and speak with guests about their Southern traditions.
This event is fun for all ages, with a kid-friendly buffet featuring mac and cheese, hot dogs, burgers, etc. and their own station set up to decorate complimentary beach bags, plus hair braiding…kids love coming out and making friends! We also have our very own Kiawah Island Golf Resort Naturalists providing entertainment…a presentation on gators and other island inhabitants that kids and adults love since they can hear about all the wildlife on Kiawah. If you’d like to take a look at some wildlife first-hand, we offer four Oyster Roast River Cruises every 45 minutes during the evening where you can see dolphins, turtles and other sea life.
You can now see why this event is Kiawah’s most popular family outing and has become an island tradition for years. Don’t forget your camera or your appetite because this is one event you do not want to miss out on! For dates and details of future Oyster Roasts & BBQ’s please click here.
