I had such a great time, as always, at my Weekend of Jazz at Kiawah Island! This year the weather wasn’t ideal for an outdoor show, so we moved to a tent ‘Under the Big Top’ and made the very best out of the situation…and it ended up going great! I really enjoyed seeing the smiles on everyone’s faces after the shows. It was rewarding to see everyone so happy since this was the first time we had to move indoors! I am so proud of our team and everyone at Kiawah Island for working so hard to make it a great experience!
Movie Producer/Director Rick Bieber came to Kiawah this year to screen his film ‘Crazy’ – the story of legendary guitarist Hank Garland for our first-ever movie night! I really enjoyed the movie and so did the guests! We brought in local Charleston food trucks for the movie night – thanks to Cast Iron, Dulce and The Charleston International Film Festival for helping make the evening so special! Rick stayed the whole week and hung out with the guests and it was great getting to know him and his wife, Stacy!
I’ve known Eric Marienthal for a long time and haven’t had a chance to spend time with him for a while, so it was a treat to have him at Kiawah! He has been touring all over the world and we were lucky to have him this year – his show was incredible!
Peabo Bryson is one of my favorite singers in the world, so any time I can spend time with him is a good time for me! He performed on the same night as Kirk and Kevin Whalum…what a talent-filled evening! Kirk and Kevin both brought their wives and enjoyed a little mini-vacation with us that weekend! It was great to spend time with them all!
I was really happy to catch up with Chris Botti at Kiawah too…he is a great guy and it’s been a while since we’ve been on the same gig together. I am so glad he and his band are coming to perform at our 10th Annual Weekend of Jazz at The Broadmoor in April!
Oleta Adams was my special surprise guest this year at Kiawah, and I love working with her. Her style and approach are so welcoming and high-energy, and she has a classic timeless style like Nina Simone. A pleasure to have her and her husband John on the show – he played drums while she sang!
As usual, I love spending time with the fans at Weekend of Jazz. There are so many returning guests that I get to see every year, and I love meeting the new ones! It’s really special for me to host these events and get to see everyone enjoying the weekend – always a highlight of my year!
