In between the soft sand scattered with sun bathers, sand castle builders, and paddle ball players, but not as far out as the wave surfers, splashers, and boogie boarders is the rich shoreline of the Atlantic Ocean on Kiawah Island. Shorebirds incessantly run and peck for food in the wet sand while beachcombers of all ages walk with their eyes peeled, each with their own unique knack for the beautiful, unusual, or unfamiliar shells and sea life washed up with the daily ebb and flow of the tide. Each step along the coast of Kiawah Island brings the opportunity to find new treasures and create lasting beach vacation memories.
The Turtles’ Nest Art Studio is excited to offer a new class this spring to solidify your memories and keep your treasures in sight. Gel Candle Making is now available! We use sand from Kiawah’s Beach as a base and let the children and adults in the class put the sand down and arrange their shells however they want around the wick. Feel free to bring the special shells you’ve collected or use some of ours. We then pour melted blue gel on top, creating an underwater scene, and scented with a fragrance sure to remind you of your Kiawah beach experience. As soon as the gel cools, the candle is ready for your enjoyment. The gel takes a long time to burn, so your artwork will provide lasting memories of your trip to Kiawah in a beautiful and functional way.
Gel Candle Making class is currently offered on Wednesdays from 9:30am-10:30am. Reservations are required; call the Heron Park Nature Center at 843.768.6001 to sign up!
