Well the crew has been very busy. Here’s our latest Osprey Point renovation update. The new putting green has been built and awaits fumigation and final shaping, along with the 18 greens on the course. By next week all of the greens should be getting their final shaping, known as “floating out.” The plan is to sprig the greens with the Paspalum in the first week of June. Keep in mind we are not changing the green contours, just returning them to their original sizes. I really believe this will be the most noticeable result of this project.
The driving range tee has been leveled, soil amended, drainage installed and a new practice bunker added. The first and eleventh tee boxes have been enlarged and all of the tee boxes on the front nine have been stripped of their old Bermuda grass. Once they get all the tee boxes throughout the course stripped, they will laser level each one prior to applying the Paspalum sprigs.
The green side bunkers on the front nine have all had their sand removed, drainage rebuilt and the occasional “tweak” made. Some have been enlarged, one or two eliminated and some re-shaped to improve the hole both visually as well as strategically. The sand from these bunkers has been stock piled on the second and eighteenth fairways to be amended into those fairways as part of the process to improve their drainage. Fairway bunkers will be addressed later in the project.
This week we will also start the process of removing the Bermuda grass from the fairways. This will be done by repeatedly and aggressively verticutting the fairways and completely removing all the old Bermuda grass. The second and eighteenth fairways will receive more aggressive treatment and shaping. More about that later.
So as you can tell, the crew is working very hard and has accomplished quite a lot in just under three weeks. Mother Nature is cooperating and we are on schedule, as planned. Let’s hope that continues. Stay tuned. And don’t forget that the Pro Shop and Cherrywood BBQ are both open. So stop in and see us.
